Mandala Centre Table
A round table for a room people walk around
Mandala — a circle drawn from its centre. The top is laid up so the grain radiates out from the middle, which means the pattern of the table and the shape of the table are the same decision.
The brief is a seating arrangement with traffic passing on three sides. A rectangular centre table in that position gives you four corners to catch a shin on and a long axis that tells people which way to sit.
Round removed both problems. The question was how to make a round top that did not look like a rectangle with the corners taken off.
Built round, not cut round
The top is laid up in segments radiating from the centre rather than cut as a disc from glued-up boards. It is considerably more work, and it is the whole piece: the grain runs outward in every direction, so the table looks the same from every seat around it.
An edge thick enough to read
The top carries a squared edge with a light chamfer. Too thin and a round top looks like a tray; too thick and it sits heavy in the middle of a seating group. The chamfer catches a line of light around the full circumference, which is what gives the edge its definition.
Four legs, turned and tapered
Round legs under a round top, tapering to the floor. Square legs would have argued with the top; a pedestal would have made the table harder to sit close to. Four legs set inboard of the rim leave room for feet.
Braced under, clear above
The underframe is a cross-brace set high and out of sight, so nothing interrupts the line from rim to floor. A centre table is looked down on more than any other piece in a room — the underside earns its keep by staying quiet.
Chosen in the hand
Built in our own factory, with the timber and the finish chosen as physical samples before anything was cut. A version for your room would be drawn to your dimensions.
A radial top moves differently from a plank top as humidity changes across the year, so the segments were cut and left to settle before the top was closed up. It is the step that does not show and the one that decides whether the joints stay tight in a Hyderabad summer.
The segments were cut, numbered and dry-laid as a full circle first, so the grain could be turned until the pattern ran evenly rather than bunching on one side. Only then was the top glued, trued and the edge worked.
It sits in the middle of the seating and reads the same from every chair, which is what a round table is for.
